Camping at Pokagon State Park: reservations, maps, and fees

Book Pokagon campsites through Indiana's official reservation service. Before choosing a site, compare the campground maps with the live booking calendar: electric and non-electric campsites, youth tent areas, and inn rooms are different options with different booking needs.

Choose a campsite before choosing a site number

Pokagon State Park is near Angola in northeastern Indiana, beside Lake James and Snow Lake. The park has electric and non-electric camping, plus separate group and youth camping options. Potawatomi Inn rooms and cabins use a different reservation path; a search for a family campsite will not cover those accommodations. Start with the official park overview if you are still deciding which kind of stay you want.

An electric listing tells you which category to search. It does not establish that your trailer fits or that the site has every hookup you need. Open the individual listing rather than choosing from a campground-wide description.

When do Pokagon reservations open?

Indiana's current camping rules open new arrival dates six months ahead at noon Eastern, rather than midnight. Month ends have special handling when the corresponding date does not exist. Check the current reservation rules for your arrival date. Have your account, equipment details, and a few acceptable sites ready before the window opens.

Eligible campsites can also be reserved until 11 p.m. Eastern on arrival day. Youth tent areas and rally camps are excluded from that cutoff. A late booking deadline does not confirm gate access or check-in arrangements; read the property's arrival instructions before travelling.

How to book a Pokagon campsite

  1. Open the official Pokagon reservation page. Enter your arrival date and the full number of nights you need.
  2. Filter for your equipment and campsite type. Compare several sites that would work for your party so you have alternatives if your first choice disappears.
  3. Read the selected site's details and restrictions, then compare its number with the official map. Check every night of the stay, not just the arrival date.
  4. Review the total, cancellation terms, and arrival instructions. Complete checkout and save the confirmation before treating the campsite as booked.

Indiana generally requires two nights for weekend reservations and three designated nights for holiday weekends. If a single night will not book, compare your dates with the published minimum-stay rules and the live calendar. Do not add nights you cannot use just to get through checkout.

Use the official campground maps alongside the calendar

DNR publishes an Electric Campground 1 map and a separate electric, non-electric, and youth tent campground map. Match the site number and area before making a decision. Keep a copy for arrival, especially if you expect to reach the campground after dark.

Use a map to compare the routes you would take from a site to marked facilities. Then use the reservation listing for equipment limits and date-specific availability. A map does not tell you whether a site is open tonight, level enough for your setup, or private. Older map notes may also predate current reservation policies.

Budget for the full stay, including admission

Pokagon's nightly camping price depends on the site type and the nights you choose. Indiana's camping fee schedule distinguishes weekdays, weekends, and holidays. Published rates exclude tax, and campers also pay a one-time park entrance fee. Use the checkout total for your actual dates when comparing options.

Read the cancellation terms before paying for a backup reservation. Charges depend on how close you are to arrival; cancelling a booking is not the same as receiving a full refund. If plans change, check whether a permitted change works better than cancelling and starting over.

What to do when your dates are full

First, remove preferences you can genuinely do without, then try a different arrival day or a shorter stay. If the calendar shows an opening each night but no single site covers the trip, our guide to split stays explains how to check whether moving sites is practical. Each reservation still needs to satisfy the booking rules.

You can also watch for a matching opening through the Pokagon campground availability page. OpenCampsite checks the booking calendar and sends an alert when a check finds a match. It does not hold or book the campsite; return to the official service to confirm availability and complete your reservation.

Watch for Pokagon campsite openings

If your dates are fixed, compare other Indiana campgrounds before relying on a future cancellation.

Check seasonal facilities before a cold-weather trip

An available winter campsite does not confirm that every loop, water point, or restroom is operating. DNR's winter camping page is tied to a particular season. Confirm the season shown, check the dates in the booking service, and ask the park about the facilities you need before setting off.

Common questions

How far ahead can I reserve a Pokagon campsite?

Indiana's camping reservation window opens six months before arrival at noon Eastern. Check the current business rules for month-end exceptions before setting a reminder.

Does Pokagon have electric and non-electric campsites?

Yes. Indiana DNR lists both at Pokagon. Use the official maps to locate the campground area, then check the individual site's equipment limits and hookups in the reservation service.

Does the campsite price include park admission?

Indiana DNR lists a separate one-time park entrance fee for camping stays, and its published camping rates exclude tax. Review the full cost before paying.

Can I camp at Pokagon in winter?

Check the dates offered by the official reservation service and confirm current loop openings, water, and restroom arrangements with the park. DNR's winter information is season-specific; a previous winter's listing does not confirm this winter's facilities.
