How to get a Pfeiffer Big Sur campsite when it's sold out
Pfeiffer Big Sur is the campground on the most famous stretch of coastline in America — redwoods, the Big Sur River, and Highway 1 out the front gate. It is also, functionally, the only large developed campground in the heart of Big Sur, which is why summer dates evaporate at the 8 am release six months out.
But ReserveCalifornia has a quirk that rewards the well-informed: cancelled sites come back on a schedule. Here's how to use it.
Why Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park sells out
Supply in Big Sur is fixed and tiny — the coast is a designated scenic corridor where nobody is building new campgrounds — while demand comes from the entire Bay Area, the Central Valley, and every Highway 1 road-tripper on Earth. Add a campground that's genuinely lovely (river swimming holes, redwood shade, walkable to Pfeiffer Falls) and there's simply no version of July where it isn't full.
How booking works on ReserveCalifornia
California State Parks sites release on a rolling window six months ahead of arrival, with a new day of inventory opening at 8 am Pacific every morning.
For arrivals on or after July 1, 2026, a new statewide policy applies: cancel seven or more days out for a full site-fee refund minus the $8.25 cancellation fee; two to six days out forfeits the first night; inside 48 hours (or a no-show) forfeits everything.
The detail cancellation-hunters should tattoo on their arm: State Parks re-releases most cancelled sites at 8 am the morning after the cancellation. Sold-out campgrounds get a small, known daily restock window.
ReserveCalifornia has a native “Create Notification” workflow that emails you if a selected site becomes available. The notice does not hold the site, so you still need to book it before another camper does.

When cancellations actually happen
ReserveCalifornia's new refund tiers (for arrivals on or after July 1, 2026) sort cancellations into two waves: an early wave from campers protecting their full refund by cancelling seven or more days out, and a smaller reluctant wave inside a week, when only the first night is lost. No-shows and last-minute bails forfeit everything, so almost nobody waits that long.
Then the part that matters: cancelled sites are generally re-released at 8 am the morning after the cancellation. The campers who get August sites in July are the ones with something watching at 8 am every single day.
