The Enchantments overnight permits

Alpine lakes, granite peaks, and a tightly limited overnight quota make Washington’s Enchantments a trip worth planning well ahead. Watch for returned zone permits.

Why go

Glacier-carved peaks surround a chain of lakes that rises from forest into open alpine country. An overnight trip gives you time to explore beyond the approach hike, with rocky passes and lakeside camps along the way. The Core is strenuous terrain suited to experienced backpackers.

Where it is

Alpine Lakes Wilderness in Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, near Leavenworth, Washington. Access is via the Stuart Lake and Snow Lakes trailheads.

When to go

Overnight permits are required May 15 through October 31. The official guide warns of snow and winter-like conditions in May, June, September, and October. Summer brings longer days; autumn brings changing alpine scenery, but a permit does not establish that a route is safe or snow-free.

Why permits are competitive

Recreation.gov explicitly says overnight demand far exceeds the permits available. The Core quota counts people rather than groups, so an opening must fit your party size as well as your entry date. This is a high-demand selection, not a statistical ranking against other permit programs.

How to get a permit

Apply through the annual advance lottery when it is open, then check the official reservation calendar for remaining or returned permits. The separate daily lottery requires being within its geofence. Check the current season’s notices for application and release dates.

What an automated search watches

An OpenCampsite search watches reservable zone inventory, including openings returned after cancellations. It does not enter either lottery or watch the location-restricted daily lottery. A Core permit permits camping in any zone; permits for other zones require camping in that zone. Choose the zone that fits your route.

Set up your search

  1. Click the watch button for the zone or permit type you want.
  2. Set your entry dates, trip length, and party size. Confirm the selected area fits your route.
  3. Choose your available notification channels and finish creating the alert.
  4. If an opening appears, follow the notification’s booking link, check the permit details, and book on Recreation.gov.

An alert does not hold inventory, guarantee a permit, or submit a lottery application.
