Why go

Glacier-carved granite basins hold dozens of mountain lakes. The Pacific Crest Trail and Tahoe Rim Trail cross this landscape, allowing anything from a short lake trip to a longer backpacking route. Lake Aloha is one option for a trip through the open granite country.

Where it is

West of Lake Tahoe and north of Highway 50, California, across the Sierra Nevada crest. Echo Lakes, Glen Alpine, and Eagle Lake are among the access points.

When to go

Permits are required year-round. First-night destination quotas run from the Friday before Memorial Day through September 30. The official page warns that heavy snow can arrive in October and persist through July; many trailheads are inaccessible by vehicle in winter.

Why permits are competitive

Summertime draws the most visitors, and each destination zone has its own limited first-night quota. Popular lake itineraries can be difficult to fit around fixed dates and group sizes. The quota system establishes limited capacity; it does not establish a nationwide hardest-permit ranking.

How to get a permit

Overnight permits can be reserved up to six months before entry. During quota season, your first night must be in the destination zone on the permit. Later nights can be in other zones within the permitted trip. Check the official calendar and route before choosing a zone.

What an automated search watches

Watch the destination zone for your first night, not a generic Tahoe campground. An alert is useful only when the opening accommodates your party and route. Hard-sided bear canisters are required, and campfires are prohibited. Returned availability is possible, but there is no promised cancellation release time.

Set up your search

  1. Click the watch button for the zone or permit type you want.
  2. Set your entry dates, trip length, and party size. Confirm the selected area fits your route.
  3. Choose your available notification channels and finish creating the alert.
  4. If an opening appears, follow the notification’s booking link, check the permit details, and book on Recreation.gov.

An alert does not hold inventory, guarantee a permit, or submit a lottery application.
