Sign in before release time, save more than one site that fits your equipment, and keep Lower Pines or North Pines open as a second search rather than choosing a single campsite photo.
Where a second chance can come from
After release morning, recheck individual nights as well as the complete stay. A shorter opening can be useful on its own or paired with a second Yosemite Valley reservation.
Recreation.gov's posted policy changes the refund cost inside 48 hours of arrival. That deadline can prompt changes, but an opening is never guaranteed, so keep an official booking page ready and verify the site dimensions before paying.

Lower Pines Campground
It keeps you in Yosemite Valley under the same block-release system, so it is the closest substitute for a Valley-based itinerary.
Wawona Campground
It trades the Valley location for another reservable Yosemite campground and can preserve the park portion of the trip when all three Pines calendars are blank.

What is the closest backup to Upper Pines?
Lower Pines and North Pines are the closest like-for-like backups because they are also in Yosemite Valley. Wawona is farther from the Valley, but it is a practical park-based fallback when the location matters more than sleeping beside the Valley shuttle route.
